It made me laugh.
Once Ken set the expectations (“Okay, now don’t expect any kind of plot.”), I just sat back and waited to see what would happen. If you don’t know, Napoleon Dynamite takes its name from its main character, who you get to follow around for a few days, reliving all of the joys of that awkward stage of life known as high school. It’s set in Idaho, which is not a backdrop Hollywood uses a lot, but fits perfectly with the quirky, no-music-just-lots-of-little-vignettes style of the film.
There are only about six real characters, but they are each so weirdly interesting that you don’t really care about anyone else. Napoleon (John Herder) is by far the best, but Pedro and Kip were also good. My favorite line of the movie is Napoleon’s brother Kip, who weighs about eighty pounds and sports huge glasses and a pencil thin stache, “…besides, we both know I’m trainig to be a cage fighter.” Priceless.
The movie is imminently quotable, and I have a few of my favorites here in MP3/Wav format:
- Training to be a cage fighter
- Napoleon’s catchphrase
- The Liger
- Skills
- Good with a bostaff
- You got my back right?
- Hunting wolverines
Definitely worth a rental.
