So recently I found myself highlighted in a video that someone put on YouTube of a Rock Band party they were having. I was playing guitar on a few tracks, pretty much shredding it. Yeah. I rocked. I’m also pretty good with a bo-staff. (No, I’m not going to post the link to the video. Just imagine me kicking ass and rocking out with a little plastic toy guitar and you get the picture.)

Anyway, Mark was here for a few days, and he showed me some of the funniest shit I have ever seen on the Internet, so I just wanted to share it with you.

First, there was the Bill O’Reilly vs. the “I Like Turtles Kid”, which I loved and thought was funny, but then Mark explained to me that what was REALLY funny was the original clip that made “I Like Turtles Kid” an Internet phenom in the first place. This clip had me laughing uncontrollably until I was clutching my stomach and thought I was going to need medical attention.

Other notable videos I’ve been shown by others on YouTube include:

Paris Hilton’s video response to McCain putting her in an ad with Barack Obama trying to stigmatize his celebrity

McCain voguing

Reaction videos to “2 Girlz 1 Cup”, of which this one was the funniest. [WARNING: DO NOT WATCH THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL VIDEO (IT'S DISGUSTING PORN), JUST WATCH THE "REACTION" VIDEOS, WHERE PEOPLE SHOW THIS NASTY VIDEO TO OTHER PEOPLE AND TAPE THEIR REACTION. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.] Also hilarious is this one with Kermit and the one from Family Guy.

RST’s spoof of Flo Rida’s “Low”.

Asian cover of Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat“

Feel free to add your own favorite YouTube vids.

I was in an Irish bar a few weeks ago having drinks with Jen and her friend Shari and these two guys were playing folksy Irish music. At some point I look at Jen and say, “I’ve heard this before… in the movie Napoleon Dynamite I think.”

Jen looks back and says, “OMG, you’re absolutely right.” (or something equally Jen-like).

So then I go on a quest to find out what the hell the song is, obviously it’s well known enough for Irish folk-playing duos to play, so it must be on the Internet.

I look up the movie soundtrack listing on IMDB.com (one of my smart friends told me about this feature) and look at the track listings, trying to discern which one it could be, if it’s even on there at all. There are a few candidates, and I think briefly about looking up the movie soundtrack on Amazon to see if I can listen to little 30-second snippets.

Getting distracted, and just wondering if there is such a domain name, I Google “movie music” to see if there is some service that lists all the songs in movies, even the orchestral ones, and sure enough, MovieMusic.com does pretty much exactly that, but it doesn’t tell me anything more than IMDB did, so I then give up on being smart and Google “what is the folky music in the end of Napoleon Dynamite?”.

First page. First result.

he 42 tracks on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack are easily crammed onto just one … and the folksy instrumental “Music For a Found Harmonium,” are MIA

Thank you Google. Thank you IMDB. Thank you Internet.

I will sleep peacefully tonight, secure in the knowledge that not only is all information available easily on the Internet, but even hard to find obscure info like this can be found with a few keystrokes on Google.

And now, for you listening and viewing pleasure, one more Google property to complete the puzzle: a video of a performance of the song I found on YouTube.

I just couldn’t hold out any longer. I’m usually an early adopter of all techy things, just because I love being able to say: “Oh yeah, [insert trendy Web 2.0 service]? I’ve been on that for ages.” I mean, after all, I do have my very own self-hosted blog (thanks to the generosity of my friend Mark Lorenc)!

But lately I’ve just been so pressed for time (as you can see from the fact that I never blog), that I have kind of given up on creating accounts on all new services just to check them out. I passed up MySpace. I shrugged off Twitter (although I am thinking about that one because they also have a Facbook API [like everyone these days] and I think they probably have a more robust functionality set than the Facbook ’status’ tool). I’m just kind of burned out on Web 2.0 at this point. But since I’ve got “innovation” in my job title, I can’t in all good conscience ignore the craze that’s even bigger than MySpace.

So here’s my profile page: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1161307629.

Friend me if you like. I don’t care who you are, I just want to look cool and popular so send me those invites all you crazy web cats, I’m ready for you. I just downloaded a gay-sounding but ridiculously fun “Hug Me” application where you can do things like throw Michael Jackson or Throw Britney Spears at your friends.

I already threw a little MJ to Ian and Darien. You could be next.

(I’m also writing this post partly to test the “WordPress to Facebook” plugin that should let this thing show up on my Facbook profile without me having to do anything. God I love technology.)

Citizens of Facebook: you have been warned.

I thought this was a wonderful little movie. It’s a great fantasy coming of age story that is firing on all cylinders. First of all, it looks beautiful, the production design is top notch. Second, it’s filled with great actors who all deliver, especially Deniro and Pfeiffer. Third, the story is very well thought out and there are many little touches that work together to reinforce the creation of this magical world.

If there is a complaint that can be had, it is that the development of the love story is a little unbelievable. First, the main character, Tristan, is a bit unsympathetic because his primary goal is to kidnap a fallen star (in the form of Claire Daines) to bring back to his bimbo crush (Sienna “Hot as Hell” Miller) so that she will marry him. The fact that he’s smitten with such a manipulative airhead reduces your opinion of the lead, and his rather callous treatment of Yvaine (the fallen star) makes it hard to root for him.

But, if you’re willing to buy into the whole premise of a magical world butting up against nineteenth century England, then I suppose you can forgive a few small character flaws.

Overall, the story keeps its logical integrity throughout the very rapid journey through Stormhold, and the movie is sure to please any real fantasy lover.
