Just saw it yesterday (when we had the power outage).
I have to say, I really liked it. The music track and some issues with the pace kept me from saying that I LOVED it, but it was still a great movie.
I was a fan of the comics too. I read them all when they came out. Frank Miller really is one of the most talented artists I have ever seen, and when he writes and draws together he always delivers something fantastic. I was glad to see him listed as co-director.
I thought the movie did a really good job of capturing both the visual style of the comic, as well as the attitude. The violence and hot-chicks-in-leather aspects were over the top, but that was the point. The cast was fantastic (Jessica Alba did a great job of being hot as hell), but the fast pace and limited time for each segment meant that no one every got to be more than one-dimensional. The good news is that their one dimension was the right one. Mickey Rourke stole the show from both Bruce Willis and Clive Owen.
My only gripes with the movie is that the soundtrack, although well-meaning with its blaring saxophone and film-noir detective sound, just wasn’t well integrated. I noticed that the Robert Rodriguez, who co-directed, edited, and acted as cinematographer, was also listed as one of the three authors of the score. He probably should have left that job to someone else. I call it the “George Lucas lesson”.
All in all, the movie was great. Delivered on all the action, attitude, and originality promised in the trailers (always a tall order). I would recommend it to anyone out for a good time and not squeamish about graphic violence.
