Stupid people can sometimes be an amusement. That is, until they get into law or politics and then threaten the safety and health of millions of people.
Take this story for example. Merck and Glaxo Smith Kline developed a vaccine for human papilloma virus, a sexually transmitted disease which can cause cervical cancer. The vaccine is nearly 100% effective. Sounds great right? Until the Stupid People attack.
Here’s their argument in a nutshell: preventing STDs is bad because it encourages kids to have sex.
First of all, I’m not a big fan of the “let’s ban X because X may cause kids to want to have sex.” If you are going to do down that road, just ban puberty, hormones, and sex organs and be done with the whole debate. News flash for you: teenage kids are going to want to have sex. Period. No matter what you do, no matter what you teach them.
Second, we’re talking about eradicating a disease here people!!! When’s the last time anyone came up with something that would cure disease and the appropriate response is to say: “No thanks. I’ll take my chances.”
Come on people, get real!
I’d like to know what these crazy people who refuse to let their kids get vaccinated would say if their child contracted HPV and it developed into cervical cancer, when a shot could have prevented the whole thing. What are they going to say?
“Told you so.”
This is like saying, “Listen Timmy, I’m not going to have you vaccinated for flu this season because I think you should just abstain from breathing.”
Stupid people are amusing. Until they spawn.
Then they’re just scary.
