Ann and I went to see this on the day after Christmas. I had read the book a long time ago, like when I was thirteen, so I had a vague recollection of what the story was about. The reason I was most excited was because the director of Shrek had teamed up with the effects people from WETA (Lord of the Rings). That combination was sure to produce a good fantasy movie.
And that they did.
The movie was beautfully shot, and the child actors they got did a very good job. The story moved at a fairly brisk pace, getting into the action of the plot quickly. The only drawback of the movie is that in order to maintain the pace, the story moves with such a quick pace that you often feel rushed from one beautiful sequence to another without any real development. It’s hard to really care for any of the characters (other than the little goaty faun dude. He was good.).
The climactic battle at the end is fun, but even it has a “broad strokes” feel to it. The CG is shown off, but always very briefly.
All in all, it’s a well done fantasy movie and worth seeing, just don’t expect the same level of detail or maturity as the LOTR movies. As one of my friends put it: “It’s LOTR for kids.”
