I still can’t decide if I like this movie or not.
Certainly it was nice to see the franchise back alive again, and I really do like Daniel Craig and think he did a great job at what has to be one of the most iconic movie characters ever made, and the stroyline has finally gotten decent… but something about the movie annoyed me.
My main gripe with the movie is that after a thrilling initial few sequences, there is an extreme amount of monotony and distinct lack of action that sets in. This is made more noticeable by the fact that the never-ending poker game takes up nearly 70% of the movie and the few exciting bits in between aren’t enough to drag you out of the slumber that is watching movie stars play fake poker.
All in all I think the movie is heading in the direction that the franchise needs to go: grittier, more focus on realistic action and stunts, and much more espionage driven and much less product placement and gadgetry. (Although I was sad to see they couldn’t figure out a way to include ONE scene with John Cleese).
I’m excited by the new installment and hope that future ones will follow the same mold and not take too long to come out.
