Memorial Day 2002 Overview | Winners | Saturday | Sunday Sunday It was 11:00 and we knew that the baker would be out of almost everything, he had been known in the past to do a little "special baking" if a pretty girl (or two) asked him. We considered sending Ken and Pete in drag, but the thought alone made us queasy. After devouring some fresh cream-filled donuts and other assorted breakfast items, Brian and Ken decided that learning an extremely complicated and math-intenstive game wouldbe a good idea. Hey, no one ever called us smart. So we sat down and had our asses handed to us in Cribbage. Thank you Ryan. Of course, we were both pretty sure he was making most of the rules up as he went along: "uh, no, three tens and a five would be good in any other circumstance... but because you have a red five, it's worth nothig." After beating Ryan with the cribbage pegs until he was bloody, we drove over to the single netted tennis court. The day before we had seen some little kids playing on the court and we were prepared to take the court by force if necessary, but the tennis gods smiled and we began by playing a set of doubles with Ken and Ryan on one side and Ann and Brian on the other. The marital advantage was not present that day, "honey, you have to hit the balls OVER the net!" Ryan and Ken ended up winning 6-1. The thought of a rematch never entered our minds. After doubles we split into singles where Ryan beat Ann 6-0 and Brian beat Ken 6-1 in a grueling match that sapped the winner enough that when Ryan and Brian played for the championship Ryan went up 4 games to 3 before Brian decided to show up and finished the set 6-4. And all this time, while the four of us were swearing it out on the clay, Amy and Sole sat at home and read books. Well, everyone relaxes in their own way. Ryan and Brian ended up canoeing back to the house in a canoe that they 'liberated' from Green Mansions. We also liberated their only paddle which made for slow going across Tripp Lake. Dinner was prepared by all (except Brian, whose contribution was getting the grill out of the garage) and that night we feasted on filet mignon, fried garlic potatos, pasta, salad, garlic bread, asparagus (Editors Note: yuck!), and a swordfish steak for Sole which was absolutely mouth watering. Burnt cookies for dessert (thank you Brian) completed the meal (Editor's Note: I swear to god that oven runs 25 degrees hotter every time I use it). We
finished the day by playing couples Cranium,
which Ryan and Amy won by cheating (how else could they have rolled so
many purples!). Highlights of the evening were:
